Narrative Medicine Case Competition on March 30th and 31st, 2024

UBC Humanities for Healthcare (HIH) AMS Humanities in Healthcare is a new multidisciplinary club aiming to use film, literature, and community engagement as a means to promote the development of critical thinking and emotional skills among aspiring healthcare professionals. We embrace UBC students from all academic backgrounds, disciplines, and career aspirations. Together, we will make for a more compassionate future for healthcare.

HIH hosting its 2nd annual Narrative Medicine Case Competition on March 30th and 31st, 2024 at the UBC Irving K. Barber Learning Centre, Room 261, to explore collaborative approaches to healthcare.

A hypothetical patient story will be used to start a conversation on patient-centered care among prospective healthcare professionals. Groups of 3-4 students will tackle these issues and present their plan to address the patient's medical conditions, and the patient's goals, as well as comment on systemic barriers that could be addressed to assist in the patient's treatment. There will also be several workshops throughout the days to strengthen students’ skills and understanding of the health issue at hand. The goal is to provide an opportunity for students to navigate the multidimensional challenges in healthcare delivery, with guidance from mentors.

This event is open to undergraduate and graduate students from all faculties and all BC universities. Healthcare professionals, patient advocates, and patients are needed to volunteer as mentors and judges.

The deadline to register to participate is March 23rd at 11:59pm.

Mentors will be key players in the competition by providing participants with real-world insight and guiding the team's thought processes. Time commitment: 3-5 hours total.

A panel of judges will evaluate the projects presented by the teams. Judges can be patients or health professionals and need to be available on Sunday, March 31st, 3:00 pm to 6:30 pm.
